Poesías completas Spanish Edition eBook Antonio Machado Reviews
fun with Spanish
I was a very young man when I first discovered Antonio Machado he has in many ways been my personal cicerone into things Spanish, and on both trips I have taken to Spain I felt as though he was hovering not far away. On my last trip I made a pilgrimage to his home in Baeza, the last town he lived in before the sad events leading to his fleeing Spain during the civil war, and his death en route to France. This Edicion Austral is currently my only copy of his complete poetry I possess (the magnificent, leatherbound edition mysteriously disappeared from my life decades ago--causing me not a little grief) and this paperback edition is showing a lot of wear and tear...
Why Antonio Machado? For a Greek American, born, bred and still living in the heart of the United States, quite simply put he has been the voice that has given me an appreciation of the sere, challenging landscape of Western America. So many of our landforms resemble Castile or the Andalucia of his later years. The deceptively simple tone and natural rhythms and rhymes of Machado's musical Castilian seems to capture the moods of the sunny landscape, the folds of the brown earth in winter, the outline of the cottonwoods. His uncanny sense of visual beauty finds profound linguistic expression the poplars become "lyres of fragrant wind in spring", a perfect metaphor for the shape of the tree, the spring breezes of steppe climates and the returning fresh fragrance that comes to the land this time of year. He is the ultimate landscape poet.
But his poetry possesses a profound moral sense it conveys passion for justice and human decency and an incredible depth of feeling. The early tragic loss of his first wife reverberates through his poems, and the final, mysterious poems dedicated to Guiomar, his mature love, simply shudder with tenderness.
And have I mentioned humor? There are epigrams and sharp insights throughout "In the words of love/ one sometimes notes a slight exaggeration"...all expressed with the most limpid, elegant and expressive of Spanish...Machado makes all sensitive readers Spaniards--even Greeks from the dry steppes of America.
Anyone who loves Spain, who loves the feast of visual beauty of the Spanish steppe (or dry, high plateaux anywhere), who is enchanted with the last rich flowering of agrarian culture before it was blasted by twentieth century "progress" will find a profound refuge in this great poet, whom I place alongside Shakespeare, Tu Fu, and Beaudelaire--supreme musical wordsmiths who capture and preserve their nation, their age in the prism of their art--forever.
His major work in one book. Some interesting facts about his life that was worth reading.
This is a book of Machado's poems. I think they're extraordinary.
